The Arts and the Construction of Space

11.04.2019

Workshop in Shanghai 11. -13. 04. 2019

In both Eastern and Western philosophies, time and space are key to understanding the world. The two cultures share certain ideas on this issue but also diverge. Art plays a crucial role in constructing the notion of space: in general, Western philosophy and natural science have more say on the problem of space; nevertheless, with increasing understanding of Chinese culture, the unique cosmological (time-space) view of the Chinese gains more and more attention. This conference themes the constructive forces of the respective space-views in Eastern and Western arts; or, reversely, how Eastern and Western space-views respectively shape their arts. As such, the conference will deepen our understanding of this theme.

To this end, the Center for the Philosophy of Art (School of Philosophy, Fudan University) and the Department of Art History (University of Vienna) will jointly organize “The Arts and the Construction of Space” Workshop on April 11-13, 2019. Through discussions over thematic research topics, the workshop will explore new dimensions thereof and strengthen academic collaborations between the two parties.
