Francesca S. Croce received the Award of Excellence – Staatspreis für die besten Dissertationen from the Federal Ministry for Women, Science and Research for her dissertation, "The Divine Master: Raphael and the Works of Giovan Pietro Bellori and Carlo Maratti"
The dissertation examines how, in seventeenth-century Rome, art theorist and biographer Giovan Pietro Bellori (1613–1696) and painter Carlo Maratti (1625–1713) sought to elevate Raphael’s reputation and preserve his artistic legacy. Through their friendship and collaboration, it explores how Raphael became a central reference point for establishing artistic authority, shaping the canon of Western art history, and defining the image of the modern artist.
Established in 2008, the Award of Excellence recognizes the 40 best dissertations of the preceding academic year, with nominations submitted by universities. Croce completed her PhD in the Department of Art History under the supervision of Prof. Sebastian Schütze, defending her dissertation in fall 2025.
