The Northern Wei dynasty was the first ethnically non-Chinese dynasty that
successfully reigned over large parts of China. In the 5th century its captial
Pingcheng – the “Peaceful City” – became one of the most bustling cities in Asia.
The city formed a melting pot of a range cultural and intellectual traditions. Its
society lay the foundations for the late medieval empires in China.
The project will reassess the city and its culture through a series of workshops
organised by the University of Vienna, Peking University and Renmin University of
China.
