1964–1972: Studies of History, German Studies, Political Science, Art History and Philosophy in Tübingen, Vienna, Paris (Sorbonne), New York (Columbia University) and New Haven (Yale University)
1981–1986: Assistant professor at the Hochschule der Künste (college of the arts) in Berlin
1984: Doctorate (Constantin Brâncuşi Prize, German National Academic Foundation, Wilhelm Borchers Prize)
1991: Habilitation (Albrecht Dürer Prize, grant programme of the Getty Foundation)
1991–1993: Visiting professor at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
Since 1994: Full professor at the Department of Art History at the University of Vienna (1995–1998: Head of the Department)
2001: Visiting professor at Harvard University
2004–2006: Head curator of the exhibition Shaping the Beginning: Modern Artists and the Ancient Eastern Mediterranean, exhibition 29 May – 18 September 2006, Museum of Cycladic Art, Athens
