1972: Doctorate, supervisors: Prof. Renate Wagner-Rieger and Prof. Otto Pächt, title of doctoral thesis: Studien zum architektonischen und architekturtheoretischen Werk L.B. Albertis (studies on L. B. Alberti's oeuvre of architecture and architectural theory)

1983: Habilitation in Medieval and Early Modern Art History at the Geisteswissenschaftliche Fakultät (faculty of humanities) at the University of Vienna, title of habilitation thesis: Domenico Martinelli (1650–1718) und die österreichische Barockarchitektur (Domenico Martinelli, 1650–1718, and Austrian Baroque architecture)

1984: Visiting professor at the University of Salzburg

1985–1997: Professor of Art History at Freie Universität Berlin
