1988: Doctorate at the University of Bonn, supervisor: Prof. Horst Hallensleben, title of doctoral thesis: Die Architektur der Kirche der Panagia Paregoretissa in Arta/Epirus (the architecture of the Church of the Panagia Paregoretissa in Arta/Epirus)

1997: Habilitation and venia legendi in Art History at the University of Bonn, title of habilitation thesis: Die Flankenräume im mittelbyzantinischen Kirchenbau. Zur Befundsicherung, Rekonstruktion und Bedeutung einer verschwundenen architektonischen Form in Konstantinopel (the flanking spaces in Middle Byzantine church architecture – on the investigation on monuments and artefacts, reconstruction and importance of a lost architectural form in Constantinople)

1998–2003: Professor by proxy at the Universities of Bonn, Mainz, Munich and Hamburg
